Important notes:

  • You must bring a copy of your eTicket to our station to collect your boarding pass either before or on your train day.
  • The maximum number of tickets per transaction is 8. If you need more, you will need to make a second transaction.
  • If there are fewer than 8 tickets listed as available for a given train, then that is the maximum number of seats left for that train.
  • Please double-check your order before you purchase. Due to the popularity of these trains, we cannot guarantee any exchanges.
  • We recommend that you plan to arrive 30 minutes before your train to allow enough time to park and collect your pass.
  • Boarding will take place approximately 15 minutes before departure.
  • In consideration of the rest of our passengers, we cannot hold the train for late arrivals. Please plan your travel times accordingly.

Getting to our Station

All trains will depart from our Waterloo Station, located at 10 Father David Bauer Drive, Waterloo, Ontario, N2L 6C2.

Free parking is available in the lot next to our station and along Father David Bauer Drive if the lot is full.

Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your planned departure time. This will allow enough time to park, collect your boarding passes, and use our station washroom. Boarding will begin approximately 30 minutes prior to our departure. Our trains will leave sharply on the published hour of departure. Please factor the weather into your driving time.

Boarding Passes

To avoid disappointment, please double-check the date and time of your departure. Since these trains will sell out, we will not be able to accommodate you if you arrive for the wrong train.

Please bring a copy of your electronic ticket with you to the station. You must exchange this with our station staff for a boarding pass that our friendly conductor will punch on board the train.

You may pick up your boarding passes ahead of of your departure day at our Waterloo Station. The station is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm on weekends and 9:00 to 4:00pm Wednesday through Friday.

If you have misplaced your electronic ticket, we can re-send your ticket. We will also have a list of attendees for each departure at the station for those forgetful parents who accidentally leave the electronic tickets at home.

What to wear

Our train cars are heated but they will not be warm enough for short sleeves and other light clothing. Children will likely be comfortable wearing a coat, sweater, long pants and a warm pair of shoes. Please dress according to the weather.

You are welcome to bring cameras to capture those special moments on the train.

What to leave at home

Since the train will be quite full, please plan to leave strollers, car seats and large bags in your cars. The train will depart from and return to our Waterloo station without stopping either in St. Jacobs or at the market.

Seating

Since these trains are popular, every seat will be sold. Children two and under will receive a VIP boarding pass which will allow them to sit on an adult’s lap for the trip.

Seating is generally arranged in sets of four. In the spirit of heritage train travel, you may find yourself sitting with members of another party.

Weather policy

Trains will depart under most weather conditions so please plan accordingly. In the event that a given train must be canceled due to the weather, the information will be posted at www.waterloocentralrailway.com as soon as possible after the decision has been made. We will also attempt to contact you using the email address that you provided.

As with all our trains, equipment and schedule are subject to change without notice.

Waterloo Central Railway


Spend some time with the Waterloo Central Railway as we roll through the City and countryside.

Santa will visit each child at their seat. While they wait for Santa, our guests will enjoy hot drinks and cookies as they get a chance to sing along to their favourite carols.

SEATING ARRANGEMENTS

Similar to a movie theatre, all seats are rush seats. Most seats are arranged in banks of four. In the spirit of historic railway travel, groups larger than four may end up sharing seats with another group. We thank you in advance for your co-operation.

PRICES

$15.93+$2.07HST per person for total of $18. Children two and under do not require a ticket, but as we expect the trains to sell out, in the event that the train is well-attended, they may be required to sit on an adult’s lap.

All tickets are rush seating and our seats are in mostly arranged banks of four. In the spirit of historical train travel, if the train is well-attended, you may be asked to share you bank with another party.

FAQs

Is the steam engine running?

Yes! Engine No. 9 went operational in October 2012.  It has run steam excursion on long weekends in May, June, July and August.  Two more excursions are planned on long weekends in September and October.  Engine Number 9 will also make appearances during crew training sessions in September and October as steam-trained volunteers are available.  These dates are tentative and subject to change without notice.

Is the train accessible?

The train is not wheelchair accessible. There are a handful of steps from the platform level to the car corridor. The first bank of seats is approximately 10 feet from the doorway. Our volunteers are on hand to assist with passenger boarding. We can accommodate most mobility aids provided they are collapsible. We cannot accommodate motorized wheelchairs.

Can I bring strollers on board?

We can accommodate strollers. For the safety of our passengers and crew, all strollers must be collapsed for storage. Children may not ride in strollers while on board.

Are food and drink on sale on board? Can I bring food or drinks on the train?

We offer a variety of pre-packaged snacks and drinks on board for very modest prices. We accept cash payment on board. You are welcome to bring your own food and drink. All we ask is that what ever you bring on board, you take with you when you leave. Please deposit all garbage in the proper receptacles. Please take your children with you.

What types of payment do you accept?

At the Waterloo Station we accept most major electronic payment methods including credit and debit cards. We can only accept cash onboard, at the Market or in St. Jacobs.

Where is the Waterloo Station?

Our Waterloo Station is located at 10 Father David Bauer Drive in Waterloo. The closest major intersection is Erb and Caroline Streets.

Is there parking nearby?

The Waterloo Station has some free parking available. The nearby Bauer Lot has additional parking.

Do I need to buy a ticket ahead of time?

No, though to avoid disappointment we recommend you purchase your tickets ahead of time either online or by phone.

How far ahead should I prepare to arrive?

To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your planned departure. This will allow ample time to park, either purchase a ticket or trade in an e-ticket receipt, peruse our gift shop and board your train.

Can I buy a ticket onboard?

Yes. For passengers boarding at the St. Jacobs Market, or the Village of St. Jacobs, tickets are available for cash sale on board. We cannot currently accept electronic payment on board.

Can I bring pets on board?

Pets are welcome on board provided they are not a nuisance or danger to other passengers and crew. Should your pet be a nuisance or present a danger to other passengers, you may be asked to leave the train at the next scheduled stop.

Can I smoke on the train?

For the protection of our equipment, and in accordance with local bylaws and provincial legislation, no smoking is allowed in any vehicle or in any building on our property.

Are there washrooms on board?

Yes.

Is my ticket tied to a specific train?

Though our tickets are sold for specific trains, you are welcome to board other trains provided there is space available. In the event that the train is full, every attempt will be made to accommodate you on the next available train. Our tickets are open return which means that you may board other trains for a given day.
