Leaving From: St. Jacob’s Market Road Side Stop

Route: Round-trip from the St. Jacobs Market Station to Elmira for the Mennonite Farm tour and back.

Waterloo Region is known for many wonderful sites and specialties but two noted reasons for travelling to this area would be to see and learn about the Mennonite Heritage as well as to visit the famous last existing covered wooden bridge, ‘West Montrose Covered Bridge’ situated over the Grand River, also known as the “Kissing Bridge”. Choose your ticket to include only an amazing scenic train ride through Mennonite country in our historic train OR the train ride along with a 1 hour 30 minute bus journey where you’ll get a glimpse “Inside Mennonite Country”.

On the Tour

You’ll board the train at the St. Jacobs Market Station with first stop at the Train Museum in the village of St. Jacobs for washroom break and viewing of the rolling museum filled with historical train information & artifacts. You’ll then re-board the train and ride off to the Elmira train stop while viewing the beauty of the area countryside with its rivers, large rail bridges, farms and fields of crops. You’ll then debark the train and hop on the air-conditioned tour bus where you’ll proceed to visit and experience the following:

Mennonite School

A small Mennonite school with the children dressed in their suspendered pants or beautiful floral frocks dependant on the time/day

Mennonite Blacksmith Shop

An authentic Mennonite Blacksmith Shop where you’ll see the equipment, the process & hold a horseshoe for good luck

Horse Farm

Where we get close up and personal with new colts, mares and stallions

Farm Metal Shop

Where they make the horse drawn buggies, wagons and other manufacturing products for both their community and ours.

Dairy Farm

Where you’ll see and smell the operation of the farm and experience the ways of those working the machines

Canning Facility

A Canning Facility for fresh produce and learn how it is done Mennonite style

Mennonite Store

Local Rural Mennonite Store with options to cash purchase sandwiches, snacks, homemade goodies, coffee plus more.

Mennonite Church

Where you’ll learn how and why the mennonite women and men enter the church from opposite sides of the building along with other customs

Mennonite Cemetery

Where you’ll learn the interesting Mennonite tradition of all those laid to rest along with other customary practices.

West Montrose Covered Bridge

West Montrose Covered Bridge where you’ll be able to photograph and walk across this last remaining wooden bridge in Ontario.

West Montrose Rural Store

West Montrose Rural Store famous for its homemade baking & unique products.

The tour bus will then take you back to the Elmira Train stop where you’ll reboard the train for your return ride to the St. Jacobs Market Station, marking the conclusion of your experience.
